Big budget movies were not that common in Malayalam film industry till a few years back, but now the industry has expanded and the reach for Malayalam films has increased. Mollywood has several epic movies set to go on floors soon including Mammootty’s Mamamkam, Mohanlal’s Randamoozham, Prithviraj’s Adujeevitham and Tovino Thomas’ Chengazhi Nambiar.
The tremendous success of the film has instilled the much required confidence in the minds of film-makers and producers.
Listed down are the upcoming big budget malayalam movies in different stages of production.
1 – Mamankam
The upcoming big budget epic drama named ‘Mamankam’ has received attention due to its subject and treatment. The debut film of Sajeev Pillai has been a break for two months. This megastar Mammootty film is now in the developing stage.
The script for the movie is written by the Sajeev Pillai himself after extensive research. Along with Megastar Mammootty, noted actors from south Indian film industry are part of the movie. The latest news is that the superstar will flaunt four different looks in the movie.
The highlight of the film is set in the late 17the century and that revolves around the life of the warriors called Chaaverukal who plot to overthrow the Zamorin rulers, will be the visual effects.
2 – Randamoozham
The Complete Actor, Mohanlal has confirmed that he will play Bhima in the screen adaptation of veteran Malayalam writer MT Vasudevan Nair’s Jnanpeeth Award-winning novel Randamoozham. This magnum opus is being directed by noted ad maker and advertising film maker VA Shrikumar Menon. It is based on the Indian epic The Mahabharata, the novel tells the story from Bhima’s perspective, the second of the Pandavas. The film has already created a buzz, thanks to its massive budget
3 – Kunjali Marakkar
Kunjali Marakkar is a historical film, who was the naval cheif of the Zamorin(Samoothiri,the Hindu king of Calicut, India during the 16th century). The story of the film revolves around the life of the brave warrior and his fights against the Potuguese. Megastar Mammootty portrays the role of Kunjali Marakkar. Award-winning cinematographer Santosh Sivan will be directing the film, besides co-producing and cranking the camera. Writers TP Rajeevan and Shankar Ramakrishnan will be penning the script for the film. August Cinema, which is co-owned by Santosh, will producing the project under its banner. The film will see a big star cast along with the Megastar himself and employing internationally renowned technicians.
4 – Lucifer
One of the most awaited projects in Malayalam cinema is Lucifer, Prithviraj’s directorial debut. Recently the title design of the movie has been released. Mohanlal will be playing the lead in the film, which will be scripted by Murali Gopy. Antony Perumbavoor will produce the movie under the banner of Ashirvad Cinemas. Earlier Mohanlal has reportedly said after reading the script work of ‘Lucifer’ that the movie would be a mass entertainer. The making and narration of the movie would be new to Mollywood, according to reports.
5 – Kaaliyan
Prithviraj’s next has been titled Kaaliyan. The movie, directed by S Mahesh, has been scripted by B T Anil Kumar. A period drama, the movie is said to be inspired by the ballads on Iravikuttipillai, a warrior of Venad. It also boasts of a steller crew, including Bollywood composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. It is also reported that the action scenes in the period drama will be choreographed by those who have worked with the hit series Game of Thrones. Sujith Vassudev will crank the camera for the project produced under the banner of Magicmoon Productions.
6 – Kayamkulam Kochunni
Kayamkulam Kochunni is an upcoming Malayalam film starring Nivin Pauly directed by Rosshan Andrrews and written by Bobby & Sanjay. The estimated budget of the film is ₹25-30 crore. The film stars Nivin Pauly in the title role and Mohanlal makes an extended cameo as robber Ithikkara Pakki.
The film is based on the life of Kayamkulam Kochunni, a famed highwayman who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor like robinhood, in the early 19th century Central Travancore during the British Raj. This is the second film based on Kayamkulam Kochunni after the 1966 film of the same name directed by P. A. Thomas. Shooting commenced on 30 September 2017 in Udupi, Karnataka.
7 – Odiyan
Odiyan starring the Complete Actor, Mohanlal is an upcoming fantasy thriller film directed by V. A. Shrikumar Menon in his feature film debut, written by K. Harikrishnan. ‘Odiyan’ in Kerala folklore, are a group of men who argues that they possess shapeshifting abilities who could assume animal form and could kill people. As the folklore goes, Odiyan is a half-man half-beast sort of person who treads his way forth through the blanket of ‘darkness’ cast by the lonely night. From announcement, 40cr big budget ‘Odiyan’ is the most awaited movie for Mohanlal fans.
The filming, which had taken place over three schedules from Varanasi to Palakkad went on for 123 days. The film has progressed to various stages after the shoot which was wrapped up last month. There are also rumours that the release date would be announced soon.
8 – Marakkar – Arabi Kadalinte Simham
Marakkar – Arabi Kadalinte Simham is an upcoming epic drama directed by Priyadarshan. Mohanlal’s own banner Aashirvad Cinemas is funding this mega project jointly with Dr Roy CJ’s Confident Group and Santhosh T Kuruvilla’s Moonshot Entertainment. Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief in the 16th century, to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army. There were four key Kunjali Marakkars during that era and Mohanlal will be seen playing one of them. According to Priyadarshan, the movie will be a semi-factious with bits of history and imagination. The budget planned to keep it around Rs 100 crores. The movie will be dubbed in all major Indian languages and other foreign languages like Chinese and Arabic.
9 – Chengazhi Nambiyar
Chengazhi Nambiyar is an upcoming period drama film. Sidhil Subramanian would direct this movie, which would become Tovino’s first big budget venture. Tovino Thomas would play an important role in the film. Nothing much has been revealed about the rest of the cast & crew members of the movie.
10 – Adujeevitham
Aadujeevitham is Blessy’s big screen adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel of the same name. It will star Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role.
Filmmaker Blessy has struck a chord among the audience with his films such as Thanmathra and Kazcha. Just when the Malayalam audience thought that they have seen the best of Blessy’s works, news about his adaptation of Benyamin’s Aadujeevitham made everyone feel that his magnum opus is yet to arrive. Aadujeevitham brings the heart-touching story of Najeeb, an immigrant from India, who gets lost in Saudi Arabia. His dreams of climbing the highest realms of success and wealth is being reduced to a slave like existence, following which he tries to make a way out of the clutches of tyrants.
