Mahanati has finally hit the screens. The film is directed by Nag Ashwin. Nag Ashwin is the mastermind of the film has not only succeeded in portraying Savitri’s reel life on screen but has also succeeded in portraying her real life and also hasn’t shyed away from revealing Savitri’s darkest secrets. The film is produced by Priyanka Dutt and Swapna Dutt. Cinematography by Dani Sanchez-Lopez for entire Madhuravani, Anthony thread is awe-inspiring. Kotagiri Vekateswara Rao’s editing is adequate though it appears a bit tedious at times due to the fact that it is a biopic. Art work by Avinash is superb, with huge number of retro sets which he excelled at.
Mickey J. Mayor background score, songs were soothing. He is filled with tracks that are bound to make you nostalgic. Full of old world charisma, the makers couldn’t have produced a more apt playlist for legendary actor Savitri’s biopic. Mahanati depicts the story of two reporters Madhurvani, played by Samantha and her photographer Anthony, played by Arjun Reddy fame Vijay Deverakonda. The story reveils what they discover when they’re assigned to write a report on Savitri (Keerthi Suresh), India’s first lady superstar. Savitri garu’s reel life needs no presentation, but real-life certainly does. She earned fame and lot of money, was a benevolent donor, but died in miserable conditions due to financial mismanagement and personal issues. Some may not be even aware of this layout . It doesn’t matter how mundane you’re, this film covers almost all phases – from childhood until death of Mahanati Savitri.
Keerthi Suresh depicts the role of her lifetime as Savitri and her charm and innocence has very well helped her in portraying the role of India’s greatest actress, Savitri. Portraying scenes of Savitri garu’s films is different ball game altogether when compared to another actress. Her films like Mayabazaar, Gundamma Katha are cult classics. Her signature characterstics is familiar to all generations and any misstep enacting her on screen or offscreen personality would ricochet. Even under that shear, Keerthy Suresh walked away with award winning performance as Mahanati Savitri.
Samantha Akkineni who played a journalist Madhura Vani got into the skin of the character. Her performance while talking to coma ridden Mahanati in climax is phenomenal.
Dulquer Salmaan, one of Mollywood’s greatest young talents is the best choice to play Gemini Ganeshan. Dulquer has great chemistry with Keerthi and blends into the role. His adaption of Gemini Ganesan with a slight of negative touch has impressed the audience and has earned the love and respect of many film lovers. Vijay Deverakonda as Anthony is good, except eloquence. Naga Chaitanya enacted his grandfather’s reel life and was super cool as ANR. Moreover, other actors who supported this biopic did their job at the topmost perfection. Makers should thank all these actors for supporting this biopic.
On the whole, Mahanti is a well fitting tribute for India’s greatest actress, Savitri. The rise and downfall of India’s first lady superstar is well portrayed and shown in a very effective manner. Mahanati Savitri took birth as Keerthi Suresh is an distortion because such was the elegance with which Keerthi carried herself as Savitri. Keerthi Suresh gives life to the character and also keeps the audience entertained with her charm.
